Long red dunes, golden grass, camel thorn trees heavy with weaver nests and a sky full of stars: the Kalahari Desert in Namibia is softer and quieter than the Namib, and just a few hours from Windhoek. Many travellers rush through on their way south. Those who stop for a night or two find one of the most peaceful places in the country. Here’s what to do, when to go and where to stay.
Quick answer
- Where: eastern Namibia; the easiest area to visit is around Mariental, about 230 km south of Windhoek
- Getting there: about 2.5 to 3 hours on the tarred B1 from Windhoek
- Highlights: red dunes, game drives, sociable weaver nests, sundowners and stargazing
- Best time: April to May and September to October
- How long: 1 to 2 nights, often as the first stop on a route to Sossusvlei or the Fish River Canyon
- Romantic stay: the Reverie Kalahari Pod, a private dome for two in the dunes
What makes the Kalahari different from the Namib?
The Namib is a true sand sea, with towering dunes and almost no plants. The Kalahari is technically a semi-desert. Its dunes are lower and run in long, parallel red ridges, with grass, shrubs and camel thorn trees growing between them. After the summer rains, the valleys between the dunes can turn green. That extra vegetation means more wildlife: oryx, springbok, ostrich, giraffe, meerkats and many birds.
What are the best things to do in the Kalahari?
- Game drives: early morning and late afternoon drives through the dunes for oryx, springbok, zebra, giraffe and kori bustards.
- Guided dune walks: a guide shows you tracks, insects, desert plants and how animals survive the heat.
- Sundowners on the dunes: watch the sand turn deep red as the sun sets, with a drink in hand.
- Sociable weaver nests: these small birds build enormous shared nests in camel thorn trees, some housing hundreds of birds.
- E-bike rides: some lodges offer fat-tyre e-bikes, an easy and fun way to explore the sandy tracks.
- Stargazing: the dry, clean air and lack of city lights make the night sky spectacular. Read our guide to stargazing in Namibia.
- Slow down: a pool, a deck and a view of a waterhole are a big part of the Kalahari experience.

The Reverie Kalahari Pod: a private dome for two
The Reverie Kalahari Pod is a striking white dome retreat set on its own in the red dunes, about 30 km northeast of Mariental in Gondwana Kalahari Park. It’s designed for two adults, which makes it one of Namibia’s most romantic hideaways.
- Your own plunge pool overlooking a private waterhole, where oryx and giraffe come to drink.
- A private host and guide for nature drives, guided walks and sundowners on the dunes.
- Little luxuries: an indoor fireplace for cold winter nights, a private bar, a barbecue, binoculars and air conditioning.
- No TV, just the desert, the waterhole and the stars.
It’s a wonderful choice for honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals. Pair it with our guides to a Fish River Canyon stay further south or the Namib Desert for a classic southern Namibia route.
How many nights do you need?
One night works as a stop on the way south, with a sunset drive and a morning walk. Two nights are better: you get a full, unhurried day for a game drive, a dune walk, a long lunch by the pool and a night of stargazing. For a romantic stay at the Reverie Kalahari Pod, many couples choose two or three nights.
